5 Bible Verses My Mother Taught Me

I believe parents play an integral role in the spiritual development of their children. I believe this in part because of my personal experience. My parents were intentional about teaching my sisters and me about the Lord, His love, His Word, and His will for our lives.

During my devotional time (this morning), I was drawn to one of the passages of Scripture my mother rehearsed almost everyday. It was Psalm 27:1, "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"

We customarily recited Psalm 27:1 as a family after morning prayer. In the evening, before going to bed, my mother would rehearse Psalm 27:1 in our hearing while she knelt beside our beds. I am thankful for a mother who knew Scripture and shared Scripture.

As a tribute to my mother, here is a brief list of 5 meaningful Bible Verses I learned from my mother.

  1. Psalm 27:1, "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"

  2. Matthew 6:9-13, "Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen."

  3. Psalm 56:3, "What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee."

  4. John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

  5. Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths."

What spiritual lessons or Bible verses did you learn from your parents, teachers, grandparents, or pastor? Revisit them, rehearse them, and recite them. There's still great power in the Word of God.

Amen
